Performance of “A Deferred Dream or a Dream Come True?”
Ernest Dawkins has composed a new 45 minute suite for large jazz ensemble featuring the spoken word artistry of Kahari B. This new work will address the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream Speech,” one of the most important pieces of African American literature ever produced. Delivered orally, it called forth the centuries-old tradition of Black oration that first shook the walls of slavery. That its semicentennial would see the re-inauguration of a Black president is a testament to its power. Yet recognizing that there remain so many who still suffer from injustice within history’s mightiest and wealthiest nation requires renewed attention to his call for civic action. This musical project is essentially the posing of a question: A Deferred Dream or a Dream Come True?
