Dawkins has led many workshops and participated in many residencies in the United States, France, and Italy. He is recognized as a mentor, is committed to working and nurturing young musicians, and strongly believes in the importance of oral history, knowledge transfer, and collaboration amongst musicians of different generations. Workshops may run one day or several weeks. Residencies typically consist of a series of daily sessions that culminate in a final performance and recording. The focus of this work is on the core jazz principles of improvisation, creativity, and composition as structural elements around which music concepts and real-world practice are taught.
